Standard ENStandard for Solid-Fuel Type Room Heaters
Also Known As:
UL 1482:2020 is a standard that covers the requirements for room heaters, which are freestanding fire chamber assemblies of the circulating or direct radiation type. These products are designed for use with a residential type chimney intended for use with low-heat appliances, and are used to burn solid fuels specified by the manufacturer. The products can be manually or thermostatically controlled, and are intended for installation in accordance with NFPA 211 and various codes such as the BOCA National Mechanical Code, the Standard Mechanical Code, and the Uniform Mechanical Code.
Additionally, the standard specifies that room heaters intended for use in mobile homes are to be installed in accordance with the Mobile Home Construction and Safety Standards published by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The product must include a field-installed cord-connected or permanently-connected blower assembly, as well as other field-installed electrical accessories rated at 250 volts or less and intended for use in locations in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70.
Any product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems different from those covered by the requirements in this standard, and that involves a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons, shall be evaluated using the appropriate additional component and end-product requirements to determine that the original level of safety anticipated by the standard is maintained. If a product's features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems conflict with specific requirements or provisions of the standard, it shall not be considered compliant with the standard. When necessary, revision of requirements shall be proposed and adopted in conformance with the methods employed for development, revision, and implementation of the standard.
