Standard ENHand-Held Motor-Operated Electric Tools - Safety - Part 1: General Requirements
Also Known As:
The UL 60745-1:2020 standard deals with the safety of hand-held, motor-operated, or magnetically driven electric tools that have a rated voltage of not more than 250V for single-phase AC or DC tools, and 440V for three-phase AC tools. This standard addresses the common hazards presented by handheld tools that may be encountered during normal use or reasonably foreseeable misuse of the tools. It also includes tools with an electric heating element, but they should comply with relevant parts of IEC 60335. Annex B includes requirements for motors that are not isolated from the supply and have basic insulation not designed for the rated voltage of the tools.
The requirements for rechargeable battery-powered motor-operated or magnetically driven tools and battery packs for such tools are given in Annex K. This standard also applies to tools that can be mounted on a support or working stand for use as fixed tools without altering the tool itself, and the requirements for such supports or working stands are given in Annex M. This standard excludes hand-held tools intended to be used in the presence of an explosive atmosphere, hand-held tools used for preparing and processing food, hand-held tools for medical purposes, and heating tools that are covered by IEC 60335-2-45.
In addition, the standard indicates that for hand-held tools intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, and hand-held tools intended to be used in tropical countries, additional requirements may be necessary. Finally, the note acknowledges that additional requirements may be specified by the national health authorities, national authorities responsible for the protection of labor, national water supply authorities, etc., in many countries.
