Standard ENStandard for Protected Aboveground Tanks for Flammable and Combustible Liquids
Also Known As:
The UL 2085:2010 standard is a set of requirements for aboveground atmospheric tanks designed to store stable and flammable, or combustible liquids with a specific gravity not exceeding 1.0. These tanks are designed to limit heat transfer to the primary tank when exposed to a 2-hour hydrocarbon pool fire and offer protection against physical damage. Additionally, the tanks should have integral secondary containment, preventing leakage into the environment.
The standard is not intended to determine the tank's acceptability for use after fire exposure, vehicle impact, or projectile impact, but it does lay down requirements for fabrication, inspection, and testing for leakage before shipment from the factory as a completely assembled unit.
Protected Tanks are intended for stationary installation in accordance with the Uniform Fire Code, the Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code, and the Automotive and Marine Service Station Code. The UL 2085:2010 standard does not provide guidance on how to anchor the tank or construct and attach ladders, stairs, guardrails, platforms, or equipment supports.
The standard also highlights that any product that involves a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons should be evaluated using additional component and end-product requirements to determine the level of safety as anticipated by the intent of the Standard. In cases where certain features, materials, or systems used in a product conflict with specific requirements or provisions of this Standard, revision of the requirements is proposed and adopted in conformance with the methods employed for development, revision, and implementation of the Standard.
