A standard known as AS 2610.1:2007 (R2016) describes the specifications for the planning, building, and maintenance of public spa pools. These spa pools can be erected individually or in conjunction with the installation of a swimming pool and are designed for leisure usage. Smaller spa baths (with a capacity of less than 680 L) and spa pools intended for medical treatments, such as hydrotherapy pools or stationary swimming pools, are exempt from this criterion.

The term "public spas," as defined in the regulation, is only applicable to those facilities. The standard also has Appendix C, which offers suggested practices for managers of public spa pools. It is significant to remember that AS 2610.2 is a distinct standard that covers private spas.
