A standard known as AS 2610.2:2007 (R2016) describes the specifications for the planning, building, and maintenance of private spa pools. These spa pools can be constructed alone or as part of the installation of a swimming pool and are designed for leisure usage. Spa tubs, also known as spa baths in accordance with AS 3861, that have a capacity of less than 680 L are exempt from the requirements of the standard. Additionally, spa pools used for hydrotherapy or stationary swimming that are supervised by medical experts are not covered.

Private spas are the only facilities covered by the standard, according to its definition. On the other hand, a different standard, AS 2610.1, applies to public spas.
