An artificial climbing and abseiling wall's (ACW) design, building, operation, maintenance, and testing are all governed by the regulations set forth in AS 2316.1:2009. The fixed and movable ACWs, comprising indoor and outdoor structures, permanent and temporary installations, as well as inflatable climbing structures, are covered by this standard. This standard's objective is to guarantee the integrity and safety of the buildings and other locations where climbing, abseiling, and bouldering are practiced.

It should be noted that playground equipment is not covered by AS 2316.1:2009; instead, AS 4685 applies to that type of equipment. Additionally, it excludes bungee jumping structures, which are covered by AS/NZS 5848. Furthermore, structures utilized for stage productions and stunt activities are not covered by this standard.
