Standard ENVentilation of Health Care Facilities
Also Known As: ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170-2021
ASHRAE 170-2021 is a standard that provides guidance, regulation, and mandates for designers and operators of healthcare facilities. It has been revised extensively to address outpatient and residential sections, with the addition of a new outpatient ventilation table to address non-acute-type spaces. The standard includes updated guidelines for separation distance requirements for varied intake and exhaust arrangements, and improved guidance on thermal comfort conditions.
Significant changes to the standard include extensive revisions to air filtration requirements, the addition of new columns in the ventilation tables to prescribe filtration requirement and designate unoccupied turndown, and expanded requirements to allow airborne infectious isolation room exhaust discharge to general exhaust under certain conditions. Guidance on space ventilation requirements needed for anesthetic gas use has also been improved, along with clarification of Class 1/Class 2/Class 3 imaging in coordination with Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI), and improved guidance related to behavioral and mental health.
