Standard ENVentilation of Health Care Facilities
Also Known As: ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170-2017
ASHRAE 170-2017 is a standard that provides guidelines and regulation for designing ventilation systems in healthcare facilities. It applies to various healthcare settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, and outpatient spaces. The revised 2017 edition includes 12 addenda to the 2013 standard with several significant changes such as lowering requirements for less-acute exam rooms, components for higher hazard exhaust airstreams, and reduced requirements necessary for electroconvulsive therapy procedure rooms.
ASHRAE 170-2017 standard also clarifies that adiabatic humidifiers are acceptable as recommended types. It also prohibits controls from changing the pressure relationships between spaces. Lab requirements are reduced, but some calculations should be considered. There is also a clarification of the definition of the primary diffuser array in operating rooms and the coordination of space-temperature requirements in the Sterile Processing Department with other industry groups.
The standard is divided into three sections: hospital spaces, outpatient spaces, and nursing home spaces. The reorganization was done, keeping in mind the forthcoming 2018 FGI guidelines, ensuring that ASHRAE 170-2017 aligns with FGI Guidelines.
