Standard ENStandard Test Method for Qualitative Analysis of Volatile Extractables in Microwave Susceptors Used to Heat Food Products
Also Known As:
The volatile extractables in microwave susceptors used to heat food products are analyzed qualitatively using the test procedure outlined in the ASTM F1519-98 (R2019) standard. This test aims to determine the kinds and quantities of volatile extractables that might be released from the susceptor material while in operation. By analyzing the design, components, and production methods of the susceptor, this knowledge can be used to reduce the output of volatile extractables.
The test procedure comprises simulating end-use circumstances on a sample of the susceptor, which is applicable to entire microwave susceptors. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) is then used to identify the volatile extractables. The test method was assessed for the identification of volatile extractables at a level of 0.010 g/in2 of susceptor surface, according to the standard. The analyst is urged to conduct investigations to ascertain the identification level for extractables that have not been appraised.
In order to aid in confirming the identity of or identifying unknown volatile extractables, the analyst is also encouraged to use known volatile extractables and sophisticated techniques like gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC/HRMS) or gas chromatography/infrared spectroscopy (GC/IR). The standard also directs the analyst for more assistance to Practice E260.
