Safety of Toys: Mechanical and Physical Properties
Also Known As:
The first component of a multi-part European standard that focuses on toy safety is called BS EN 71-1:2014+A1:2018. This standard ensures that toys comply with the European Toy Safety Directive and supports the key requirements of EU Directive 2009/48/EC. In order to reduce risks that might not be immediately obvious to users, it establishes specifications and test procedures for the mechanical and physical qualities of toys.
Consumers, importers, distributors, and authorized agents of toy producers are all subject to the requirement. It offers consumers guidelines on what to expect from manufacturers and retailers and provides manufacturers and retailers with crucial information to assure conformity. For toy providers, the standard is intended to be a management tool that will aid in planning and guarantee compliance through self-declaration or third-party assessment.
The standard does not address electrical safety issues, which are covered by a different standard, or inherent risks that are clear to children or caregivers. Additionally, it does not include things like playground equipment, toy cars with internal combustion engines, slings, and catapults. Toys made for infants under the age of 36 months and young children unable to stand unassisted must meet certain specifications.
The standard also specifies packaging, marking, and labeling standards for toys; however, it excludes items like sporting goods, musical instruments, and similar ones. It does not apply to items that are not toys, such as decorative items, items for collectors, and certain tools and gadgets made for public or educational use.
The most recent revision of this standard, BS EN 71-1:2014+A1:2018, combines three amendments into one and updates the 2014 version while addressing cords and drawstrings in toys and packaging, projectiles, rotors, propellers, and flying toys.
