The standards for furniture that incorporates single-phase electrical power distribution systems with rated voltages up to 250 V AC are specified in BS 6396. These systems can be powered by batteries with a nominal voltage of no more than 48 V DC or by connecting to the fixed wiring of the building's permanent installation using a 13 A fused plug and socket outlet arrangement that complies with BS 13631 for plugs and BS 13632 for socket outlets.
Because there are other standards available for them, it's crucial to note that BS 6396 does not apply to electrical appliances used with or inside furniture.
