The specifications for the supply and assembly of electrical power, data, and telecommunications distribution systems in office furniture, educational furniture, and office screens are outlined in BS 6396:2008+A1:2015. Both furniture intended for general use and furniture created for use with particular equipment are covered by the standard.

The requirements of the standard include testing to guarantee the security of the furniture's installed power distribution system. It applies to single-phase electrical power distribution systems with rated voltages up to 250 V AC that are connected to the fixed wiring of the building using a 13 A fused plug and socket outlet arrangement that complies with BS 1363. The specification also covers how cables should be run through furniture.

It is important to note that since there are already suitable standards for that equipment, BS 6396 does not apply to electrical appliances used inside or with office or educational furnishings. The regulation also does not apply to special-purpose workstations in labs or workshops or to power distribution systems that are permanently connected to the building installation.
