Requirements for Sleeping Bags - Part 1: Thermal and Dimensional Requirements
Also Known As:
The focus of this standard, DIN EN ISO 23537-1, is on the specifications for adult-sized sleeping bags used for recreational purposes. It offers requirements for dimensions and thermal properties, test procedures, and labeling guidelines. It is crucial to highlight that this standard does not cover sleeping bags made for children or infants, those used on trips in hazardous temperature zones, or those used for military usage.
The standard acknowledges the lack of prediction models for estimating the maximum temperature of sleeping bags made for children and newborns based on thermal resistance. The construction of such models is difficult since controlled sleep studies with infants or children in climatic chambers are not allowed for ethical reasons. The guideline also states that -20°C is the upper limit for harsh climate conditions.
The standard also tackles potential problems that could occur with sleeping bags that have non-homogeneous fills, which are intended to add more insulation in particular places. The search for appropriate techniques for determining temperature ratings in these circumstances is still ongoing.
