Requirements for sleeping bags - Part 1: Thermal and dimensional requirements
Also Known As:
ISO 23537-1:2016 is a standard that specifies the specifications and testing procedures for adult-sized sleeping bags used in sports and recreational activities. It specifies how these sleeping bags should be labeled depending on their thermal and dimensional properties.
It should be noted that this guideline does not apply to sleeping bags designed for specific reasons, such as military use or expeditions to extreme temperature zones. Furthermore, it excludes sleeping bags for children or babies. This is due to the lack of a prediction model for predicting the limiting temperatures for children and babies based on the thermal resistance of the sleeping bag.
The extreme temperature for extreme climate conditions is -20 °C. ISO 23537-1:2016 specifies the procedure for evaluating the performance of a sleeping bag in steady-state settings, specifically its cold protection.
One significant aspect mentioned in the standard is that sleeping bags with non-homogeneous contents, which are meant to give increased insulation in certain areas, may present calibration and testing challenges. The development of adequate methods for establishing temperature ratings for these sorts of sleeping bags is still ongoing.
