The AS/NZS 60335.2.12:2018 standard is concerned with the security of electric warming plates, warming trays, and related devices used in homes and other similar environments to keep food or vessels warm. Appliances with a rated voltage of up to 250 V must adhere to the specification. It includes equipment designed for common household usage as well as equipment for use by laypeople in businesses, light industries, and farms.

The appliance is not covered by this standard, however, if it is designed for professional use in commercial settings, such as processing food for commercial consumption or keeping vessels warm. The standard intends to address frequent risks connected to these equipment that people may encounter inside and outside of their homes.

The standard, however, does not clearly address the safety of anyone, including children, who could have physical, sensory, or mental disabilities or who lack the skills and knowledge needed to use the appliance safely without supervision or guidance. Additionally, it does not take into account kids playing with the appliance.

The standard's Note 101 underlines the possibility of additional requirements for appliances intended for use in automobiles, ships, or airplanes. It also notes that national health authorities, labor protection authorities, and other comparable entities may impose additional requirements in many nations.

The standard does not apply to appliances made of flexible materials like fabrics, appliances specifically created for areas with unique characteristics (such as caustic or explosive atmospheres), or appliances created for industrial or commercial use alone, according to Note 102.
