The specifications for tables used in educational situations are outlined in the AS/NZS 4610.1:2020 standard. This standard applies to a wide range of tables, including those that are fixed in height or height-adjustable, stackable or not, flip-top, cantilevered, pedestal, sitting and standing, and sit-to-stand tables. These tables' work surfaces can be adjusted in height and can be either horizontal or up to 20° tilted towards the user.

The standard also covers optional extras like glides, castors, or wheels on the supports or legs, storage compartments like drawers or shelves, and whether the tables are fully completed or need to be put together. Certain types of tables, such as those used in manual arts classrooms, laboratories, office settings, clerical desks for teachers or administrative staff, general-purpose tables used for non-work purposes, commercial environments, and electrical conformance, power, and communication cable management, are not covered by this standard.
