Guidelines for the design, manufacture, labeling, and testing of appliances used largely for ornamental purposes are provided by the AS 4558:2011 standard. With a maximum gas usage of 72 MJ/h, these appliances replicate the appearance of gas log, coal, or other fuel fires.

The standard identifies and specifies the two types of appliances that fall under its purview. However, since they have different standards defined in AS 4553, space heating appliances and indoor flueless appliances are not included in this standard.

The standard makes use of Figures in Appendices A and G, which serve as visual aids to the text. Additionally, Appendix B contains a list of the test methods, with the applicable clause number and the related test method (M.O.T.) number listed there.
