Also Known As:
The safety standard AS/NZS 60335.2.17:2004 explicitly addresses electric blankets, pads, and comparable flexible heating devices used for domestic and related uses. The maximum rated voltage for these appliances should be 250 volts. The control units that come with the appliances are likewise covered by the standard.
The standard mainly addresses typical risks connected to this equipment in and around the home. It does not, however, account for the usage of these devices by unattended youngsters, people with disabilities, or young children playing with the device. The regulation states that if children have received sufficient instruction from a parent or guardian and are deemed competent to use the equipment safely, they may do so without adult supervision.
The use of appliances in automobiles, ships, aircraft, or nations with additional laws set by national health authorities or labor protection agencies may necessitate additional requirements.
Appliances made for use in corrosive or explosive environments, rigid bed warmers made of metal or ceramic material, water bed heaters, heating devices for animal breeding and rearing, foot warmers and heating mats, and appliances made specifically to be used under medical supervision are all expressly excluded from the standard.
