Standard EN SampleStandard Specification for Eye Protectors for Selected Sports
Also Known As:
The ASTM F803-19 standard defines the specifications for eye protection used by athletes in sports such as racket sports, women's lacrosse, field hockey, basketball, baseball, and soccer. These eye guards are designed to limit or eliminate eye and adnexa injuries caused by hits and penetration from various game items such as rackets, balls, sticks, palms, elbows, and fingers.
The standard divides protectors into four types based on their design: Type I, Type II, Type III, and Type IV. Type I refers to a protector with a single unit integrating the lens or lenses and frontpiece, as opposed to a protector with separate frame temples or other methods to attach the lens or frontpiece. Type II is a protective lens with a separate frame made as a separate item that can accommodate a single plano or prescription lens. Type III is a lensless protector, whereas Type IV is a full or partial face shield.
The materials used in eye protectors are subjected to optical and mechanical tests to verify compliance with the standard. Measurements of field of view, optical quality, luminous transmittance, prismatic deviation, haze, refractive power, and the assessment of surface imperfections and internal defects are examples of optical testing. High-velocity impact resistance and projectile simulator tests are examples of mechanical tests.
The guideline further states that protective eyewear is solely meant to protect the eyes and adnexa and does not protect other portions of the head. It applies to corrective lens wearers as well as those who do not need prescription eyeglasses, with a recommendation for polycarbonate or Trivex spectacle lenses if spectacles are worn under the protective eyewear.
