Standard ENStandard Test Method for Particle Size Analysis and Sand Shape Grading of Golf Course Putting Green and Sports Field Rootzone Mixes
Also Known As:
The ASTM F1632-03 (R2018) standard specifies the equipment, techniques, and calculations needed to determine the particle size distribution and shape grading of sand in rootzone mixes used in golf course putting greens and other sand-based sports grounds. This standard is intended for combinations with a sand concentration of 80% or more by weight.
Sieving is used to determine the particle size distribution, with particles larger than 0.05 mm (retained on a No. 270 sieve) being targeted. The pipet method of sedimentation is used to determine the silt and clay percentages. These approaches enable the particle size distribution of the rootzone mix to be analyzed.
This standard also includes a qualitative evaluation of the sand's particle form. It should be emphasized, however, that this test method was created exclusively for applying green rootzone mixes and that other methods, such as Test Method D422, can be used for particle size measurement of other soils.
