Standard ENStandard Test Methods for Organic Matter Content of Athletic Field Rootzone Mixes
Also Known As:
For measuring the percent organic matter of volume ratio in mixed putting green and sports turf root zone mixtures, use the instructions in the ASTM F1647-11 (R2018) standard. Peat and other organic soils are not covered by this standard, but Test Methods D2974 are suggested for them.
Two techniques are described in the standard for calculating the organic matter content. The loss on ignition (LOI) approach is used in Method A to assess the weight loss brought on by the combustion of organic materials by heating the sample to a high temperature. The color intensity of the reaction result is ascertained via a dichromate oxidation process in Method B, also referred to as the Walkley Black method, and is then quantified colorimetrically.
These test procedures are designed to offer a uniform method and tool for measuring the amount of organic matter in root zone mixes.
