Standard EN SampleStandard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Playground Equipment for Public Use
Also Known As:
The ASTM F1487-21 standard establishes performance and safety requirements for various types of public playground equipment. In order to decrease serious and permanent injuries, it specifies dimensional specifications for clearance and use zones.
From the 5th percentile of 2-year-olds to the 95th percentile of 12-year-olds, the standard is applicable to a wide spectrum of users. It does not, however, include soft confined play equipment, toys, amusement rides, sports equipment, fitness equipment for users above the age of twelve, or home playground equipment. Aside from safety concerns not addressed by the DOJ's 2010 Standard for Accessible Design, it also doesn't address accessibility.
Scope, referenced documents, terminology, materials and manufacture, general requirements, performance requirements, requirements for access and egress, equipment, playground layout, accessibility, installation, structural integrity, maintenance, signs or labels, manufacturer identification, keywords, figures, and hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA) are just a few of the sections that make up the standard.
When new equipment does not fall within one of the specified types, the designer or manufacturer should conduct a hazard analysis and use professional judgment to adhere to the proper mitigation standards. Additionally, the standard offers generic measurements, tolerances, and conversions, including tolerances for dimensions and inch-pound to metric conversion factors.
