The ASTM F2598-09 (R2017)e1 standard describes the performance specifications and testing procedures to guarantee the safety of chests. It is made to reduce occurrences and harm to kids brought on by both typical use and reasonably foreseen abuse or misuse of these chests.

The standard only applies to items referred to as "clothes chests" or other single-compartment closed rigid boxes, often known as "cedar chests," which are made and marketed for use as storage receptacles for clothing, blankets, or linens. It includes items with a single volume of at least 1.1 ft3 (0.031 m3).

Importantly, any chest created after the date of adoption of this standard cannot, by labels or other means, indicate conformance with the specification unless it complies with all the requirements stated in the standard.
