Range hoods and cooking fume extractors used in homes and other similar contexts must be tested for airborne acoustical noise in accordance with the standards of BS EN 60704-2-13:2017. It applies to those pieces of equipment that are made to filter or exhaust the air in a room, as well as to their accessories and parts. The standard also includes down-draft systems that are placed next to, beneath, or below the cooking surface, as well as cooking fume extractors with an external fan.
The standard states that it is acceptable to use the noise measuring techniques described in ISO 3743-1, ISO 3743-2, and ISO 3744. While ISO 3743-1 and ISO 3743-2 include restrictions on the maximum size of the cooking fume extractor being evaluated, ISO 3744 is suitable for noise sources of any size. This standard's primary goal is to quantify the noise output of home cooking fume extractors during typical usage, more specifically at the highest fan speed. The standard does not, however, include rules for the declaration of noise emission values, which is a crucial point to remember.
Based on the described testing techniques, the standard gives estimated standard deviations of sound power levels in terms of particular values. Table 101 contains these values. Table 102 also offers suitable values for calculating and verifying stated noise emission values in accordance with IEC 60704-3.
