The European Standard BS EN 15338:2007+A1:2010 describes test procedures and specifications for the strength and toughness of extension elements and their parts used in furniture, excluding table extensions. By applying loads, strains, and velocities, the standard provides tests that mimic both legitimate functional use and potential misuse. The tests instead concentrate on assessing the characteristics of the extension elements and their connection parts, such as screws, rather than being material, design, or manufacturing process-specific.
With the exception of the corrosion test, all tests are carried out within a predetermined test window. It is significant to note that the test results only apply to the specific extension element that was evaluated and give advice on how well a certain piece of furniture performs. If the tested model is reflective of the production model, then these results may be used to represent the performance of production models.
It is important to note that the standard does not take aging into account or how heat and humidity affect the extension elements.
