The safety of electric pumps for liquids with a temperature under 90 °C is the emphasis of the BS EN IEC 60335-2-41:2021+A11:2021 standard. Pumps with a rated voltage of no more than 480 V for other appliances and no more than 250 V for single-phase appliances are covered by this standard.

The standard gives examples of appliances that fall under its purview, such as vertical wet pit pumps, shower boost pumps, sludge pumps, aquarium pumps, and pumps for garden ponds and table fountains. Additionally, it states that this requirement applies to battery-operated appliances as well as other DC-powered equipment.

The household environment includes the home, any attached structures, and the garden. However, the risk that children and other vulnerable individuals pose while using certain types of pumps is not particularly addressed by the standard. For appliances intended for trained users in stores, light industry, farms, or those that are designated for commercial use, Annex ZE has extra criteria.

The use of pumps by minors, vulnerable individuals, young children, and very young children is not fully addressed by this standard, which takes into account the reasonably foreseeable risks encountered by all users. It emphasizes that extremely vulnerable people might have requirements that go beyond what is addressed in the agreement. It also mentions the possibility of extra standards being needed for appliances used in automobiles, ships, and aircraft, in addition to any particular requirements established by national health authorities and labor protection authorities.

Except where otherwise noted, certain types of pumps, including stationary circulation pumps for heating and service water installations, pumps for flammable liquids, industrial pumps, pumps used in explosive or corrosive environments, and pumps using electrolytic chlorinators, are not covered by this standard.
