The CSA Z96-15 (R2020) standard is a technical document that offers recommendations and requirements for the creation, pick-and-use, application, and maintenance of high-visibility safety clothing. The standard's third edition replaces the 2009 and 2002 editions that came before it. The standard aims to be technically compatible with ISO 20471 and ANSI/ISEA 107.
The performance of retroreflective and backdrop materials incorporated into clothing is the main focus of the standard. This is done to increase the wearer's visibility in well-lit, low-light, or dark work conditions. The standard specifies standards of backdrop material luminance, color, and retroreflective performance, as well as human body coverage of high-visibility components. It establishes two degrees of retroreflective material performance and three classes of clothing based on body coverage. The specification also provides provisions for flame-resistant clothing.
The guideline suggests performing a hazard analysis for each profession to identify the potential for workers to be struck by moving vehicles and the surrounding circumstances. The application of high-visibility safety clothing (HVSA) to certain risk categories and occupational types is outlined in Annex A. The guideline emphasizes that limiting workplace design and employee exposure to moving vehicles is the first line of defense against personal injury accidents. HVSA enhances worker visibility and issues a warning to drivers of moving vehicles, acting as a second line of defense.
Examples of complying garment designs are included in Annex B for the benefit of standard users, and Annex C contains manufacturers' self-declaration forms for conformity. The standard also details minimum area, color, retroreflection, and material configuration performance requirements.
