The safety standards for heated carpets and heating units installed underneath removable floor coverings in households and similar electrical appliances are the topic of the standard IEC 60335-2-106:2021. This comprises heating devices made to heat the space in which they are placed, as well as portable heated carpets, heated carpets, and other items. The standard covers all appliances, including those powered by direct current (DC), with rated voltages up to 480 V for other installations and 250 V for single-phase installations.

The standard underlines that different wiring regulations may be in effect in other nations and that certain conditions with corrosive or explosive atmospheres may call for additional standards for appliances used in automobiles, ships, airplanes, or other similar structures. It also acknowledges the possibility of new standards imposed by national authorities in the fields of fire safety, building codes, health, and labor protection.

Appliances used in special environments, industrial applications, blankets, pads, and other flexible heating appliances, heated mats and foot warmers with an area not exceeding 0.5 m2, permanently incorporated flexible sheet heating systems, flexible heating elements in other appliances, and battery-operated appliances are all specifically excluded from the standard.

The standard's 2021 edition underwent a technical modification that brought the text into compliance with IEC 60335-1:2020 and turned several notes into normative text. Additionally, it modifies the test technique and adds standards for washable and portable heated carpets. Unless a certain edition specifically forbids it, this Part 2 of the standard shall be used in conjunction with the most recent edition of IEC 60335-1 and its revisions.
