Standard for Refrigeration Unit Coolers
Also Known As:
The requirements for unit coolers used in different refrigeration applications, such as refrigerators, freezers, refrigerated warehouses, and walk-in coolers, are covered by the UL 412:2018 standard. The voltage of the alternating current (AC) circuits to which these unit coolers are to be attached must not be greater than 600 volts.
The standard makes it clear that other air-conditioning equipment or components that have their own unique specifications are not covered, including fan-coil units designed for comfort cooling, heating, or both. This makes sure that the standard's emphasis is always on unit coolers made expressly for refrigeration.
The National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) and the Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems (ASHRAE Standard 15) both address the installation requirements for unit coolers, as noted in the UL 412 standard. By doing this, it is ensured that the right installation procedures are used to advance compliance and safety.
