A standard called AS/NZS 60335.2.11:2017 is concerned with the security of electric tumble dryers used in homes and other similar situations. The standard applies to tumble dryers rated at up to 480 V for other appliances and up to 250 V for single-phase appliances. It also includes the drying cycles of washers with a drying feature.

The safety of tumble dryers that use a refrigeration system with sealed motor-compressors to dry textile material is also covered by the standard. These appliances might employ flammable refrigerants, and Annex BB of the standard includes additional criteria for such products.

The standard's scope includes non-domestic appliances that can nonetheless endanger the public, such as those used by laypeople in laundromats, light industries, farms, or public spaces like apartment buildings or stores.

The standard aims to address common appliance hazards that are present in and around the home for all people, but it does not fully take into account the safety of people who have physical, sensory, or mental limitations, as well as those who lack the experience and knowledge necessary to use the appliance safely without supervision or instruction. Additionally, it does not take into account kids playing with the appliance.

The use of appliances in vehicles, ships, aircraft, or nations with particular rules from national health authorities, labor protection authorities, water supply authorities, transportation authorities, or building authorities may necessitate additional requirements.

Appliances specifically made for industrial usage or for use in locations with unique characteristics like corrosive or explosive atmospheres (dust, vapor, or gas) are exempt from the standard's requirements.
