According to AS/NZS 60335.2.68:2003, which is a standard, electrical portable, motor-operated spray extraction machines and associated accessories that are meant for industrial and commercial usage must meet certain safety criteria. The standard applies to appliances with rated voltages up to 480 V for other appliances and 250 V for single-phase appliances. Machines that handle dangerous liquids or dust, such as asbestos, are likewise covered by the standard, but it is noted that in those circumstances, extra national standards may be applicable.

The appliances covered by this standard must have a positive cleaning agent pressure of no more than 2.5 MPa or a pressure-to-flow rate ratio of no more than 100. At the spray nozzle exit, the cleaning agent's temperature must not be higher than 85 oC. If their impact is taken into account, it is also applicable to appliances that use other sources of energy for the motor.

According to the standard, additional requirements can be required for appliances used in automobiles, ships, or airplanes, as well as for meeting standards set by authorities in charge of labor, health, and water supply. Appliances made specifically for handling hazardous solvents, those used in the home, or those used in places with unique characteristics like corrosive or explosive atmospheres are exempt from the norm. Additionally, it does not include personal computers, portable motor-operated electric tools, audio, video, and similar electronic equipment, medical appliances, hand-held motor-operated electric tools, or similar equipment.
