A European standard called BS EN 14749:2016 specifies the safety criteria and testing procedures for several types of kitchen and bathroom storage units, as well as home storage furniture. Non-domestic storage, office storage, industrial storage, catering equipment, retail storage, and industrial storage lockers are exempt from the standard. The items covered by EN 71-1 (Safety of Toys, Part 1: Mechanical and Physical Properties) and EN 60065 (Audio, Video, and Similar Electronic Apparatus, Safety Requirements) are likewise excluded from this standard.
The resistance to aging, deterioration, flammability, and electrical safety are not covered by the standard. Strength testing for wall hanging units are not covered, nor are safety concerns pertaining to the building's structural integrity. It should be noted that the standard does not take into account the wall itself or any attachments to the wall, but simply the cabinet and its parts, including wall attachment mechanisms.
The standard's Annexes A, B, C, and D include more details. Additional test methods are provided in Annex A; instructions for testing units and components in accordance with the standard are provided in Annex B; a loading example for wall-hanging units is provided in Annex C; and a technique for calculating vertical and horizontal acting forces is provided in Annex D.
