The European standard BS EN 1957:2012 describes the testing procedures for establishing the longevity, hardness, and firmness ratings of mattresses and fully assembled beds. It applies to all mattress-covered bed types, with the exception of water beds, air beds, and baby cradles. Although the firmness grade is determined according to a precise procedure in the standard, it should be highlighted that neither comfort nor quality are directly measured by this value. The impacts of aging and degradation brought on by air, light, humidity, and temperature are not covered by the standard. Results from tests are only applicable to the particular object under consideration, and if they are to be applied to items of a similar nature, the test specimen should fairly reflect those products.
