Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 1: General requirements
Also Known As:
For the safety of electrical appliances used in homes and other similar situations, CSA Group and Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) created the CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 60335-1:16 standard. This standard, which replaces earlier iterations and is based on IEC Publication 60335-1: edition 5.1, is the second edition of CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60335-1 and the sixth edition of UL 60335-1.
The standard's scope includes electrical appliances with rated voltages up to 480 V for other appliances and 250 V for single-phase appliances. Both battery-operated and DC-powered appliances are included. The standard also covers appliances used in stores, light industry, and farms that are not designed for regular household use but could nonetheless endanger the public.
The standard addresses frequent appliance-related risks that are present in and around every person's home. However, it does not take into consideration those with physical, sensory, or mental impairments that make it impossible for them to use the device securely without assistance or instruction, nor does it take into account kids playing with the device. Appliances used in automobiles, ships, aircraft, or as required by national health authorities and other relevant authorities may need to meet additional standards.
Appliances used in hazardous environments (such as corrosive or explosive atmospheres), appliances used exclusively for industrial purposes, audio/video equipment, medical appliances, hand-held motor-operated electric tools, personal computers, and transportable motor-operated electric tools are all exempt from the standard.
