The CAN/CSA-E335-1/3E-94 (R2013) standard is primarily concerned with the security of electrical equipment used in homes and other similar environments. The specification covers appliances with rated voltages up to 480 V for other appliances and 250 V for single-phase appliances. Equipment made to be installed and utilized in compliance with Part I of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) is subject to it.

Appliances with motors, heating components, or a combination of both are covered by this standard. It also covers devices that aren't meant for common household use but could nevertheless present a risk to the general public, as those employed by laypeople in retail establishments, small-scale manufacturing, and agricultural settings. These include, for instance, kitchenware, commercial and industrial cleaning equipment, and equipment for hairdressers.

The standard's objective is to address the typical dangers posed by appliances that are experienced by everyone in and around the home. However, it does not particularly address the scenario of young children playing with the device or the use of appliances by elderly or infirm people without adult supervision.

The standard also emphasizes the possibility of additional standards for appliances used in cars, ships, aircraft, and tropical nations. It recognizes that further standards may be established in other jurisdictions by national health authorities, labor protection authorities, water supply authorities, and similar organizations.

The following items are specifically excluded from this standard: radio and television receivers, medical appliances, hand-held motor-operated electric tools, personal computers, blankets and other heating appliances, electric fence energizers, and transportable motor-operated electric tools. Additionally, this standard does not apply to appliances created solely for industrial use.
