Safety of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Part 2: Particular Requirements for Washing Machines
Also Known As:
The safety standards for electric washing machines intended for domestic use are the main topic of the CAN/CSA-E335-2-7-94 standard. With a rated voltage of up to 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances, these appliances are made for washing garments and fabrics.
The standard mentions that washing machines might have capabilities including drying, water extraction, and heating the water. A washing machine must adhere to IEC 335-2-4's specifications if it also has a spin extraction function. Similar to this, if a washing machine has a drying function, it must adhere to IEC 335-2-11's specifications.
The standard's scope extends to washing machines that receive both electricity and other types of energy. It covers appliances that could endanger the public, such as those used in laundries, light industry, farms, apartment buildings, and other community spaces.
The standard tries to address frequent risks related to these appliances; however, it does not expressly address scenarios where small children may play with the device or the usage of appliances by elderly or infirm people without supervision.
The standard also emphasizes the possibility of additional criteria for appliances intended for use in cars, ships, airplanes, or tropical nations. Additional regulations might also be imposed by national health authorities, labor protection authorities, water supply authorities, and other similar bodies. Appliances made specifically for industrial use or those destined for areas with corrosive or explosive atmospheres are exempt from the standard's requirements.
