Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 2-7: Particular Requirements for Washing Machines
Also Known As:
Electric washing machines used in homes and other settings must adhere to safety regulations set forth in the CSA E60335-2-7:13 (R2019) standard. The standard outlines specifications for washers that are intended to clean fabrics and clothing, with rated voltages not exceeding 480V for other appliances and 250V for single-phase appliances.
Additional standards are listed in Annex CC and apply to electric washing machines that use an electrolyte rather than detergent. For washing machines with a power-driven wringer, advice is given in Annex DD to ensure safety from electrical and thermal dangers. The standard covers washing machines used in public places that could endanger the general public, such as apartment buildings or laundromats.
While the standard addresses common risks connected to washing machines that people in and around the home may encounter, it does not fully take into account the needs of people who have physical, sensory, or mental impairments, as well as those who lack the experience or knowledge necessary to use the appliance safely without supervision or instruction. Additionally, it does not take into account kids playing with the appliance. The standard also notes that individual national restrictions established by health authorities, labor protection agencies, water supply authorities, and other similar organizations may cause some standards to change.
The standard does not apply to washing machines made solely for industrial use or equipment built for use in environments with unique characteristics, such as corrosive or explosive atmospheres.
