Gas-Fired Tubular and Low-Intensity Infrared Heaters
Also Known As:
An outline of requirements for newly manufactured gas-fired low-intensity infrared heaters and infrared radiant tube heaters can be found in the ANSI Z83.20-2016 and CSA 2.34-2016 standards. These heaters have inputs of up to and including 400,000 Btu/hr per burner and are made of new, unused parts and materials. The standard applies to heaters made for use with propane, natural gas, produced gas, mixed gas, LP gas-air mixes, and heaters that may be switched between using propane and natural gas.
According to the standard, these heaters are designed to be used in exterior spaces or commercial interior spaces, both of which rarely have combustible vapors or gases present. When placed in line with certain regulations, the heaters may be used in aircraft hangars or garages and may be suspended overhead, mounted at an angle above, mounted on the wall, or mounted on the floor. Additionally, there is space for heaters of the catalytic kind to be installed within.
The standard defines the terminologies used and discusses the design and functionality of these heaters. Appliances falling under Categories I, II, III, and IV are all affected. An annex contains special construction guidelines for appliances made to work with the optional conversion kits mentioned. Separate annexes with provisions particular to the United States and Canada are also included in the standard.
