A safety standard called CAN/CSA-E335-2-24-94 (R2004) is applicable to numerous household and related electrical appliance types. In particular, it covers electrical freezers, frozen food cabinets, and refrigerators with or without compartments for frozen food, as well as combinations of these pieces of equipment. Additionally, it comprises ice makers designed for use in food freezers or frozen food storage chambers as well as ice makers that feature a motor-compressor.

The standard is applicable to residential appliances as well as those used while camping, traveling in a travel trailer, and on recreational watercraft. These appliances can run on battery power, mains power, or a combination of the two. They could potentially receive additional energy from other sources, such as gasoline.

The goal of this standard is to guarantee these gadgets' safety. The precise construction and operation aspects of refrigerators and freezers are not included because those are covered by ISO Standards. However, Appendix BB has several stability and mechanical hazards tests, some of which were adapted from ISO Standards.

The standard also states that it covers appliances used in stores, light industries, and farms that are not designed for regular family use but could nonetheless endanger the public. The unique risks that can arise in settings like nurseries, where there might be small children or elderly people without supervision, are not addressed. In some circumstances, further restrictions may be required.

Separate motors, appliances meant for use in locations with corrosive or explosive atmospheres, appliances built specifically for industrial reasons, and appliances intended for use in vehicles, ships, or airplanes may also be exempt from the standard.

It is vital to keep in mind that different countries may have additional standards set forth by national health authorities and authorities in charge of labor protection. Along with this standard, these extra requirements should be taken into account.
