Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 2-24: Particular Requirements for Refrigerating Appliances, Ice-Cream Appliances and Ice Makers
Also Known As:
IEC 60335-2-24:2020 is a standard that focuses on the safety standards for domestic electrical appliances and other similar appliances, particularly refrigeration, ice-cream refrigeration, and ice-making appliances. For single-phase appliances, the rated voltage cannot exceed 250 V, while for other appliances, it cannot exceed 480 V. Additionally, it covers equipment for recreational boats, traveling trailers, and camping. Both the mains and a separate battery can be used to power these appliances.
The standard also applies to equipment used to make ice cream for home use and appliances of the compression type that employ flammable refrigerants. It does not, however, address construction- and operation-related aspects that are covered by other IEC standards. It also broadens its application to include refrigeration equipment used in non-domestic settings, including staff kitchens, farms, lodging facilities, and catering applications.
The standard does not adequately take into account people with physical, sensory, or mental disabilities or children who may need supervision to use the appliances safely, even while it attempts to address typical dangers encountered by all people in and around the house. It also recognizes the possibility of extra criteria for appliances used in certain environments, such as cars, ships, or aircraft, as well as regulations established by national health, labor, and water supply authorities.
The standard does not apply to appliances made specifically for industrial use, open-air usage, or use in environments with unique requirements such as corrosive or explosive atmospheres, which is crucial to highlight. Additionally, some categories of appliances are not included, including those with remote motor-compressors, motor-compressors themselves, commercial dispensing and vending appliances, and ice cream machines.
The eighth edition of the standard, IEC 60335-2-24:2020, replaces the seventh edition that was released in 2010 and any future changes. This edition incorporates updates to normative references, definitions, measuring techniques, and specifications for various components and materials used in the appliances, as well as technical revisions matched with IEC 60335-1, Ed. 5.2. The standard comprises the contents of the August 2021 corrigendum and is meant to be used in conjunction with the most recent edition of IEC 60335-1 and its revisions.
