Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 2-116: Particular Requirements for Furniture with Electrically Motorized Parts
Also Known As:
A safety standard called IEC 60335-2-116:2019 primarily addresses furniture with electrically operated elements used in homes and other locations. The standard is applicable to home furnishings with a maximum rated voltage of 250 V. It includes a variety of furniture, such as electrically operated or adjustable chairs, desks, stands, tables, beds, and more.
The goal of the standard is to handle the foreseeably dangerous situations that are offered by furniture that has electrically powered pieces. It does not, however, account for people with physical, sensory, or mental impairments that would make it unsafe for them to use such furniture. Additionally, it excludes kids using this furniture for play.
It should be noted that extra criteria could be imposed by national health authorities, labor protection authorities, fire protection authorities, and other similar entities, as well as rules related to furniture used in automobiles, ships, or aircraft.
The standard excludes heated furniture, electric hospital beds, electric wheelchairs, industrial furniture, built-in appliance cabinets, and some furniture made for children's or outdoor use. It only concentrates on the dangers posed by the electrically powered furniture components when used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
