Electric Toys - Safety
Also Known As:
The safety criteria for electric toys made for kids under 14 are outlined in the standard IEC 62115:2017. This comprises games and toys with at least one electrical component. The standard includes a wide range of products, including doll houses with inside lamps, practical electric toys (that resemble adult appliances), construction sets, experimental sets, and electric toy computers. The packaging for an electric toy is also seen as a component of the toy itself.
The safety concerns associated with the toys' electrical function are the only ones that the standard focuses on. Toys powered by batteries, transformers, solar cells, and inductive connections are all included. The 2003 edition of the standard and all updates since then have been replaced by this second edition.
The standard's revised edition includes several substantial technical updates. Modifications to the standard test procedures, requirements for reducing testing, and the insertion of warnings for toys using button or coin batteries are some of these. Other updates address issues with ride-on toys, battery accessibility requirements, toys placed above children, toys connected to other devices, the safety of toys with optical radiation sources, measurement techniques for toys with EMF-generating field sources, and the security of electric ride-on toy remote controls.
National committees are urged to give equipment producers and testing facilities a transitional period so they can meet the new specifications and carry out the required tests. It is advised that the standard's provisions be applied nationally between 12 and 36 months after its publication.
