The safety standards for household and similar electrical appliances, particularly microwave ovens, including combination microwave ovens, are the focus of the standard IEC 60335-2-25:2010+A1:2014+A2:2015. It covers microwave ovens with a maximum rated voltage of 250 volts.The standard also tackles the safety concerns of appliances used in stores, light industries, farms, and other situations that may pose a risk to the general public. Microwave ovens designed for use on ships are also included.

Comparing this iteration of the standard to the previous one reveals many modifications. These include a changed scope that now distinguishes between "household and similar use" and "commercial use" and now takes into account microwave ovens on board ships. The standard also makes it clear that it does not take into consideration youngsters playing with the appliance or anyone who lacks the skills or training required to operate it properly without supervision or guidance.

The door endurance test has also been rationalized; several interlock system types are now permitted; tests for electronic door interlock systems have been defined; and the pollution level for combination microwave ovens has been specified. The standard also specifies the minimum thickness for sheaths around heating elements in combination microwave ovens that are visible to glow.

Within 12 to 36 months after the standard's release, it is advised that its provisions be adopted nationally. There is no longer a need to order separate amendments because the sixth edition (2010), amendments 1 and 2, and amendment 2 are all included in this consolidated version. IEC 60335-1:2013, which addresses general specifications for home appliances and other similar electrical appliances, should be read in combination with it.
