The ISO 9523:2015 standard outlines the specifications and testing procedures for adult touring ski boots with regard to their interface with touring ski bindings. The standard focuses on rigid-soled ski boots that can be utilized with the toe and heel-attached touring ski bindings currently in use. The size and layout of the interfaces determine how well these bindings perform their release function.

For ski-binding systems that operate independently of sole form or have different requirements for sole dimensions, the standard is not necessary. In these circumstances, adherence to ISO 9523:2015 is not necessary in order to provide the specified degree of safety.

This standard is relevant to ski boots in the Mondopoint system that are 15.0 sizes and larger. It does not apply to boots with softer shells, such as Telemark boots, but only to rigid touring boots. The shell stability required for these softer-shell boots to function as a component of the release systems is absent.
