Standard ENStandard Test Method for Resistance to Puncture of Cushioned Resilient Floor Coverings
Also Known As:
A common test procedure called ASTM F924-90 (R2015) measures how resistant cushioned resilient floor coverings are to tears brought on by forks and other fallen pointed items.
The goal of this test is to mimic real-world situations in which resilient flooring that is cushioned is exposed to dangers like falling objects and cutting instruments that can pierce the wear layer. These holes may leave stains that cannot be fixed with routine care because of the presence of food and soil. Additionally, moisture, grease, or oils that reach the cushion layer can diminish the lifespan of the flooring material and create discoloration.
The test procedure comprises dropping a 35-g cylindrical dart with a flat, small-diameter tip onto a sample of flooring. This dart produces a puncture that is comparable to those made by dropped forks and represents the weight of a standard fork. The use of very high drop heights or dart weights is not viable because flooring with thicker wear layers may not penetrate even under harsh drops.
