Standard ENStandard Test Method for Resistance to Abrasion of Resilient Floor Coverings Using an Abrader with a Grit Feed Method
Also Known As:
Using an abrader with a grit feed mechanism, ASTM F510/F510M-20 is a standard test procedure for assessing the resistance to abrasion of resilient floor coverings. The goal of this test is to identify a flooring material's capacity to endure typical wear and tear brought on by abrasive particles found in regular foot traffic.
The test method uses a modified Taber abraser with brass wheels covered in leather in place of the standard abrading wheels. Aluminum oxide grit is applied to the specimen using a grit-feeding apparatus before it passes underneath the wheels. The wheels and abrasive grit provide a rubbing action as the specimen rotates, abrading the test piece. The device has a suction system built in to get rid of old grit and worn-out material.
It should be emphasized that only one type of abrasive action and abradant are simulated by this test method, which limits its applicability to flooring materials. As a result, the results shouldn't be interpreted as a precise indication of the floor covering's eventual lifespan. Although the test's results can be useful for material development, they shouldn't be the exclusive basis for making commercial comparisons.
