Standard ENStandard Specification for Helmets Used for Recreational Snow Sports
Also Known As:
The ASTM F2040-18 standard specifies the performance requirements for nonmotorized recreational winter sports helmets such as skiing and snowboarding. The standard is meant to be a performance standard rather than a design standard. While a helmet that satisfies this standard can help minimize the risk of some head injuries at slower speeds, it cannot provide comprehensive protection. Users are responsible for participating in the sport within their abilities while keeping fluctuating snow conditions in mind.
The standard calls for helmets to go through a series of tests to determine their dynamic strength retention and positional stability. Impact tests are carried out using various impacting apparatuses, including flat, hemispherical, and edge anvils. The tests and requirements described in the standard must be met entirely; partial use of the standard is not permitted. Any product that fails to meet any of the standard's requirements is considered to have failed and should not be sold with any indication that it meets sections of the standard.
Compliance with this standard, as well as adhering to common-sense regulations and safety recommendations for the specific snow sport, is critical for lowering the danger of bodily injury. Except when stated in the specification, the standard refers to Test Methods F1446, which must be followed.
