The classification, design, fabrication, installation, and operation of water slide systems are all outlined in ASTM F2376-21, a standard practice. It applies to water slide systems that submerge riders' bodies in water while they ride and are designed for use by riders wearing bathing suits. The practice includes several water slide system parts, such as the flume, water circulation system, starting platform, structural supports, vehicles or aquatic accessories, and means of slide termination.

Regardless of the date of construction, the standard provides standards for owners and operators of water slide systems. Additionally, it defines certain guidelines for the design, production, and construction of water slides already in operation or of unaffected parts of a water slide system that don't see significant changes.

Some water slides, including those installed in private homes, water flume amusement rides with incidental water contact, amusement rides covered by other ASTM standards, ground-based lazy rivers, and inflatable water slides mounted on land or floating in the water, are not included in this practice.

Manufacturers are required to submit a historical summary of the water slide and a statement attesting to its service proven or prior compliance status for pre-existing designs created after the standard's effective date. Designs that were previously compliant may continue to be considered compliant for five years after the standard's release. Thereafter, they must comply with the practice's requirements or show proof of service.

The standard additionally offers an Appendix with extra details to improve comprehension and application of the practice's specified criteria. However, it is not necessary to read the appendix's material.
