The classification, design, manufacture, construction, significant modification, and operation of water slide systems are all covered by ASTM F2376-21a, a standard practice. It focuses exclusively on attractions designed to be used by riders dressed in bathing suits, where the ride's action involves immersion in water and employs flowing water to drive the rider along a path that was specifically designed for the purpose. A flume, a water circulation system, a starting platform with access and egress, structural supports, vehicles or aquatic accessories, and slide termination methods are all specified in the standard.

The standard sets specific owner/operator criteria and is applicable to all water slide systems, regardless of when they were built. Existing water slides and parts of water slide systems that haven't undergone significant changes must adhere to the standards that were in effect when they were built.

Water slides installed in private homes, water flume amusement rides where water contact is incidental, and amusement rides and gadgets protected by other ASTM standards are some examples of exceptions to the use of this technique. Additionally prohibited are inflatable water slides that are mounted on land or float on water because those are governed by different rules.

The standard accepts pre-existing designs created after its release, as long as they have a track record of reliability or compliance. Manufacturers requesting this qualification must also explain that the design is service-proven or has previously been in compliance, as well as provide a historical overview of the water slide or significant alteration. Water slides and significant modifications, however, need to be service-proven or adhere to this approach after five years from the standard's release date.

An instructive Appendix to the standard offers more details and recommendations, although it is not regarded as required.
