The standard's scope includes a variety of experimental sets, including additional sets, sets for growing crystals, and sets for producing carbon dioxide. As long as they contain dangerous chemicals in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008, it also covers sets for chemical experiments in other disciplines such as mineralogy, biology, physics, microscopy, and environmental research. The standard also specifies the marking standards, a contents list, usage directions, eye protection, and the tools needed to carry out the experiments.

It's crucial to remember that the standard does not apply to toys covered by EN 71-13, such as cosmetic kits, or to mixed sets that contain multiple types of toys. The EN 71-5 standard contains additional particular standards for some chemical toys. The Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of categorization and labeling of chemicals, which has been implemented in the European Union, is taken into consideration by the standard and is in line with the REACH Regulation.
